Missing product data when loading template in the editor

Our shopify product page templates rely on product data being passed from the current shopify page. Sometimes there is an error and no product is selected by default, resulting in a screen that looks like this:

To fix this situation, choose a product from the options tab. To choose one, click on the “Options” tab in the menu on the left side of the screen, and then select a product:
